The First Appointment

With whichever type counselor you first meet, you should expect to have a directed interview or meeting. Answer questions honestly and interact with your counselor openly. Describe your symptoms in a forthright manner.

Before you leave, make sure you are seeing the right counselor. It is possible that you will be referred to another specialist or that your counselor will want to bring in another counselor with experience in the area of mental health that will best suit you.

If you are nervous about group therapy sessions, ask questions about exactly how the sessions will take place. If medications are prescribed, always ask about the dosage and possible side effects. If you and your counselor work together, it is surprising how much better you will feel.
